IDENTIFICATION KEY ART FOR THE AMERICAN MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY'S MILSTEIN HALL OF OCEAN LIFE, NEW YORK
Our biology backgrounds, illustration abilities and stamina were all put to the test with this, the largest project we've ever worked on. Illustrations of 400 species were required. It took us seven months of nonstop work to complete: no weekends, holidays, or hot meals. Each illustration for the identification keys and decks had to retain enough detail to provide clarity and sufficient differentiation, but not so much detail that immediate recognition was lost. Some of the species were entirely new to science, and the only visual reference for these deep sea creatures was the live video footage filmed aboard the ALVIN sumbersible, which was sent to us from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute. It's not an exaggeration to say that we nearly wore out the "rewind' button on our remote.
The exhibit is permanent and will be in place for the next thirty years.
